The President and
the Treasurer (who both happens to be with Gugma Han Samar) will
represent FPOP-Samar Chapter in the FPOP-National Council Triennial
Assembly this coming 30th of April 2005 in Manila.
Of the 35 local
chapters in the entire country, Samar ranks 3rd
in terms of sustainability. This is because of the performance of
the community-based volunteers and the clinic staff.
There are more than
80 community-based volunteers for FPOP-Samar and about 250 members.
The Family Planning
Organization of the Philippines
is a duly registered private voluntary organization in the
Philippine Societies and Exchange Commission. It was established on
August 4, 1969 as a result of a merger between the two pioneering
organizations in the country's family planning movement - the
Planned Parenthood Movement of the Philippines and the Family
Planning Association of the Philippines.
It is a proud member of the International Planned Parenthood
Federation, the international organization of more than 150 Family
Planning Associations worldwide, having been given recognition of an
affiliate member since 1969.
With the poverty and
population problems prevailing in Samar, and even in the entire Region VIII, both the national and
local governments are facing difficulties in the implementation of
their development agenda.
For FPOP-Samar, the
Municipal Government of Catbalogan has been very supportive by
financially subsidizing the Chapter's operation. Mayor Coefredo Uy
pledged 60 thousand pesos for 2005, and the two (2) municipal lady
councilors, Hon. Herminia Cabral and Hon. Perfecta Sabenicio, have
both pledged 20 thousand pesos each from their community development
funds.
The only local chief
executive who joined as member of the FPOP–Samar chapter is the City
Mayor of Calbayog - Hon. Mel Senen S. Sarmiento.
One of the strong
arms of FPOP-Samar at present is the youth sector, and they call
themselves the WARAYA - the youth advocates on adolescent
reproductive health.
